The Cure (1995) {Mill Creek Entertainment Retro VHS Blu-ray Review}

In the 1990s their were many film on friendship. From the crazy films like Wayne's World and Half Baked, comedies like The Little Rascals and Clueless and even horror films like I know what you did last summer or the absolute classic The Sandlot.

In 1995 a heart wrenching, tear jerking dramatic tale of friendship entitled The Cure was released. Now for the first time in the United States The Cure is getting a Blu-ray release. But beyond that Mill Creek Entertainment is giving The Cure a Retro VHS style release.

The film follows Erik (Brad Renfro, The Client) who just moved into a new town. He finds himself thrilled when he makes friends with his younger neighbor, Dexter (Joseph Mazzello, Jurassic Park, Bohemian Rhapsody
), and his mom (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand that rocks the cradle). Despite the disapproval of his own mother (Diana Scarwid, Mommie Dearest, Psycho III), Erik grows close to Dexter. But Dexter has a problem he suffers from AIDS. As the disease's impact get more noticeable, Erik and Dexter embark on a quest to New Orleans down the Mississippi River. There is a doctor there that they hope can cure Dexter.

The Cure really takes you on a emotional journey. The film is a product of a different time when the world was a lot less tolerant. So there is a lot of homophonic slurs and bullying. But there is the inspiration of a friendship that endures
 in spite of such hate.

Peter Horton is known for his acting in such films as
Children of the Corn, Side Out. and on the classic television series Thirtysomething. But here he makes his feature film directorial debut and what a film to make a debut with.

The Cure makes it American Blu-ray debut thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment. The film is transferred in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is DTS-HD Master Audio. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

It is pretty cool to see this film in HD. A previous DVD release saw this film released in full screen format. Here it is presented in the original widescreen format. The film looks and sounds great on Blu-ray.

There are sadly no on disc bonus features. It would have been nice to see interviews, or ca commentary. The best feature other than the widescreen edition of the movie, is the VHS Style slipcover (seen above). The retro line from Mill Creek Entertainment is truly the best on the market. They put so much love into these release, and I appreciate that so much.

Sadly I have seen a lot if disparaging comments about these retro VHS Style releases. I want to make this
 perfectly clear these are slipcovers. The actual Blu-ray insert is artwork that is void of the VHS look. So Mill Creek Entertainment has something for everyone.

If you love films that make you go through a box of Kleenex The Cure may be just the film for you. Head over to
Amazon or Deep Discount and order your copy of this Blu-ray today

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Mill Creek Entertainment's Blu-ray release of The Cure receives...
