Salt and Pepper Double Feature

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

The Rat Pack is most notably remembered from it's 1960s incarnation. The group featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. The Rat Packers would appear together on films, including films Ocean's 11,and Sergeants 3, Robin and the 7 Hoods.

In 1968 Sammy Davis Jr. (A Man Called Adam, Anna Lucasta) joined forces with Peter Lawford for a comedy spy spoof entitled "Salt and Pepper". Than the returned in 1970 for one more adventure in "One More Time". Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics are bringing this swinging double feature to Blu-ray.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An OK way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Salt and Pepper (1968)
Charles Salt (Davis) and Christopher Pepper (Lawford) own a swinging night club in London. Things are going great for the duo, but it all goes from good to bad when they discover the body of a murdered female agent in their club. They soon find themselves neck deep in a fumbling investigation and uncover an evil plot to overthrow the government. ****

One More Time (1970) Charles Salt (Davis) and Christopher Pepper (Lawford) are back for One more adventure. The duo seek financial help from Pepper's wealthy twin brother, Lord Sydney Pepper, who promptly denies them a loan. Not discouraged Pepper tries once again, but he his brother murdered. Pepper posing as his sibling to keep the club afloat, be he fails to realize his brother had a lot of baggage and a lot of enemies. Now they are after him. ***

Long before there was an Austin Powers there was Salt and Pepper. The off-the-wall antics makes this double feature a very fun experience. Now along with the great Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford there are some more great actors in this double feature, most notably
Michael Bates (The Clockwork Orange) is in Salt and Pepper and than look for Christopher Lee (Dracula) and Peter Cushing (Dr. Who and the Daleks) as Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein in One More Time.

The screenplays for both of these films were written by Michael Pertwee (A Funny Thing happened on the way to the forum). Salt and Pepper was directed by Richard Donner, the man that brought us the film where we believed a man could fly, 1978's Superman. Than the sequel One More Time was directed by the comedy legend Jerry Lewis.

Both of these films have been transferred in 1080p in their original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now Salt and Pepper seems to be just transferred but the sequel One More Time has been transferred from a 2k scan. One More Time looks stunning, but surprisingly Salt and Pepper looked to me pretty great too. I was impressed by the quality of both of these releases. Kino Lorber has done it again making another must add Blu-ray to the classic film fans collection.

Now for me two Rat Pack features on one Blu-ray is enough for me to recommend it to you the reader. But Kino Lorber added some cool bonus features to this disc. Take a look at what is included.
