A Man Called Adam (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Sammy Davis Jr. was an entertainer from the time he was a child. He grew to become one of the members of the iconic group of performers known as The Rat Pack. He was a Grammy nominated singer best known for song "The Candy Man". But he was also an accomplished actor.

He was very active guest starring on TV shows and also starring in many films. After starring along side Rat Pack members in a couple films in 1966 he was take the lead role in a drama entitled A Man Called Adam. For Black History Month Kino Lorber has released this amazing film on Blu-ray.

Adam Johnson is a jazz musician who seems to have the world on a string. He has friends, a beautiful wife and fame. But Adam can't escape the horrible circumstances of his past. His past threatens to destroy not only his career, but his very life.

Sammy Davis Jr. is surrounded by an amazing cast including blue legend
Louis Armstrong, Ossie Davis, Cicely Tyson, Mel Tormé and fellow Rat Pack member Peter Lawford. For the director's chair producers brought on board veteran television director Leo Penn. He did a masterful job.

The screenplay is a thought provoking story and Sammy Davis Jr. puts in the performance of his lifetime! He was so good in this film I am shocked he didn't get at least nominated for an Oscar, if not win. That was a true shame.

Kino Lorber has transferred this film from a brand new 4K Master. The picture is presented in 1080p in 1.66:1 aspect ratio. The audio is DTS-HD Master 2.0. There is also optional English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The new picture master is c'est magnifique. And the music and dialogue in 2.0 is clear as a bell. This is one beautiful transfer.

As for bonus features we get the Theatrical Trailer and a new audio commentary
by Film Historian and Critic Sergio Mims. In this commentary he brings the listener so much information of the history of this production as well as the legendary performers. This commentary is a must listen.

As a fan of Sammy Davis Jr. I have seen a lot of his films, but this is the first time I got to see A Man called Adam. This new 4K master is a thing of beauty. Kudos to Kino Lorber for this release.
