Anna Lucasta (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Sammy Davis Jr. was an icon in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Loved by Millions. His voice was unique and his swagger undeniable. He made many films in his career, but is probably best known for his guest appearances on TV shows.

In 1958 he made his dramatic film debut in the film that starred the great Eartha Kitt. Anna Lucasta is the 2nd movie version of the stage play of the same name and the first with an all black cast. Now Kino Lorber Studio Classics bring us that film on Blu-ray in a brand new 2K Master. But is this new Blu-ray worth checking out. We are going to let you know in this review.

The film follows Anna (Eartha Kitt) a beautiful, vibrant wild child who is thrown out of her house by her self-righteous father. This leads her down the path to become "a lady of the evening". She is finds herself being pursued by sailor Danny Johnson (Sammy Davis Jr.). This lifestyle goes one for quite a while, when her family hear of a rich farmer who is looking for a wife for his son and they think of Anna. The plot works as Anna falls in love with the farmer, but when Danny reappears in this picture, will this destroy Anna's chance for true love?

Anna Lucasta is a heart wrenching and yet inspiring tale of love and loss. Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis Jr. are pure gold together in this film. And the supporting cast was stellar as well. Rex Ingram was amazing as Anna's father Joe. There were other remarkable casting choices, Rosetta LeNoire (Family Matters), Alvin Childress (Amos and Andy), James Edwards (Patton) and Isabel Cooley (Cleopatra).

Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release is really something special here. This new 2K restoration looks absolutely stunning. I found no damage to the print it is amazing! The film is presented in 1080p in aspect ratio 1.66:1. Included in this Blu-ray is the Theatrical Trailer for Anna Lucasta as well as English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I never got the opportunity to see this film before this release and I am glad that my first viewing was this Blu-ray. It is a absolutely flawless looking transfer. I am so impressed with this 2K restoration I give this our highest recommendation.
