Ever since the beginning of films, there have been debates as to what was the best picture that people saw during the year. Thus The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with their goal being advancing the arts and sciences of motion pictures.
Ever since 1929 when it debuted The Academy Awards Celebration has captivated audiences. Who will win Best Actor, Actress and Director? But most of all what film will win the coveted Best Picture Oscar?
As a fan of films for my entire life and classic films most of all, I thought what would be my top favorite best picture winners of all time. This is a hard thing to narrow it down to just seven, but that is what we tried to do.
So on this list I tried to make a good mix of films from every genre. Some of these films may not be your choice, but the films on this list I feel a historic and deserve on the list.
7. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) Three World War II veterans, two of them traumatized or disabled, return home to the American Midwest to discover that they and their families have been irreparably changed.
6. The Lost Weekend (1945) The desperate life of a chronic alcoholic is followed through a four-day drinking bout.
5. Oliver! (1968) After being sold to a mortician, young orphan Oliver Twist runs away and meets a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by an elderly mentor in 1830s London.
4. Ben-Hur (1959) After a Jewish prince is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend in 1st-century Jerusalem, he regains his freedom and comes back for revenge.
3. Rocky (1976) A small-time Philadelphia boxer gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.
2. The Apartment (1960) A Manhattan insurance clerk tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts, but complications and a romance of his own ensue.
1. Casablanca (1942) A cynical expatriate American café owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.
Now whether these are your favorite Oscar winners or not, one thing is for sure films bring us so much entertainment. These actors and actresses are more than people they have become legends.
