Some Came Running (1958) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were part of a group of entertainers that hung out together. They were known as The Rat Pack. Later in their careers the Rat Pack would appear in movies together. But in 1958 Sinatra and Martin would appear on screen together for the first time in the film Some Came Running.

This romantic drama directed by Vincente Minnelli is now making it's Blu-ray debut thanks to the good folks at Warner Archive. And if you are a Rat Pack fan no doubt you couldn't be happier.

Hard-drinking novelist and World War II veteran Dave Hirsh (Frank Sinatra) finds himself on a bus to his hometown, after being gone for many years. His brother is enbaressed with his brother's wild way want him to settle down, and introduces him to English teacher Gwen French (Martha Hyer). But instead Dave spends his days hanging with Bama Dillert (Dean Martin), a professional gambler. Torn between Gwen and Ginny Morehead (Shirley MacLaine), a not so prim and proper woman who loves him, Dave's anger increases to tragic end.

The film is based on James Jones second novel. His first was From Here to Eternity. Vincente Minnelli was known for directing amazing musicals, but here he dives into melodrama and shows he can direct that genre just as well! Putting his name in the conversation of best directors of all time.

Some Came Running is is a thought-provoking film that explores many social elements. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are pure gold in this film, but Shirley MacLaine really stands out in her role.

The film has a 1080p transfer in widescreen with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono. The picture is sharp and the audio clear. There is no signs of damage to this print. I don't believe this film has ever looked better than it does on this Blu-ray.

Warner Archive didn't stop at a beautiful copy of this film they added some cool bonus features:
* English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
* The Story of Some Came Running: A very good 20 minute featurette with film historians Drew Casper, Dana Polan, Peter Travers and Jill McElaney discussing this film.
* Theatrical Trailer

Some Came Running is a visually stunning and at times heart wrenching melodrama. Frank Sinatra had many amazing roles in his career, but this one really stands out. No wonder he considered this one of his favorite roles.

So if you are a fan of Frank Sinatra films I highly suggest seeing Frank at one of his dramatic best. Some Came Running on Blu-ray is the best looking copy you are going to find. Head over to Amazon.com and get your copy today.
