Jaws terrorized movie fans so much that many stayed away from the beaches. Ever since its release film makers have been trying to recapture the magic of the Spielberg classic.
There have been some entertaining shark films over the years including, "The Shadows", "The Meg" and "Deep Blue Sea". Now the latest "shark horror" is Great White now on Blu-ray from RLJ Entertainment.
A couple charter a plane to the picturesque Hell's Reef. But when the plane is destroyed in a freak accident, the five passengers
find themselves on a raft just trying to survive. When the realization come to fact the this situation is hopeless, things over from bad to worse when they begin to be terrorized by a ravenous great white. Will they survive? Will anyone survive? You'll have to see the film to find out!
Great White is your typical killer creature feature. I will say the for this release they took the "less is more" approach. Building the tension of the unknown and when the shark might attack. Also the producer took the practical effects instead of relying wholly on CGI which makes this film much more believable.
The cast consists of five people. Katrina Bowden, Aaron Jakubenko, Tim Kano, Kimie Tsukakoshi and Te Kohe Tuhaka. This is an extremely small film cast. It can be hard to carry a film story with not many people in it, yet everyone puts their all into the roles and does a good job.
As a warning the terror can be a bit intense at times and there is some profanity. However it is not too much more than is found in the original Jaws film. But if you are offended by bad language or if you have small kids, you may want to stay away from this one, or put the kids to bed first.
The film is transferred on Blu-ray in 1080p in widescreen format and in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also subtitles in English, Spanish and French. The film looks stunningly beautiful on Blu-ray, but you kind of expect that with a 2021 release.
As for bonus features it is a bit meager with just a making of Great White featurette and a behind the scenes photo gallery. It does however come with a very nice slipcover, which I always find as a nice bonus.
Now while Great White is not the best shark feature I have ever seen, it is not without it's entertaining moments. It will defiantly give the viewer 90 minutes of escape from the cares of this life. And after all that is mostly what films are supposed to do.
So if you love creature features you may want to add this one to your collection. You can get a copy of Great White on Blu-ray by heading over to Amazon.com today.
