Shenandoah (1965) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

James Stewart was a acting legend. He was able to preform in every genre of film. Comedy, adventure, thriller, drama, biographical and even westerns. Being able to seamlessly transfer from one genre to the next in such believable fashion when other great actors were pigeon-holed makes what he did so amazing.

James Stewart would bring the fun with the comedy Mr. Hobbs takes a Vacation before heading back to the Old west. Than in 1965 he would star in the western drama Shenandoah. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber is giving this impactful human drama a Blu-ray release it deserves.

Shenandoah follows a wealthy widower named Charlie Anderson (Stewart) who is opposed to the civil war on moral grounds and refuses to get involved! Yet his hand is forced when his son-in-law is called upon to serve in the Confederate forces, his youngest son is captured by the Union army, and another son and his pregnant daughter-in-law are killed by looters.

James Lee Barrett wrote a remarkable screenplay. The human emotion is real and raw. A story of love and loss. James Stewart is an extremely strong lead. Director Andrew V. McLaglen had directed John Wayne in his first film McLintock and now directing James Stewart in his second talk about Hollywood heavyweight. But he did a masterful job in bringing his vision to film.

James Stewart is joined by a impressive cast including; Doug McClure (The Virginian), Geln Cornett (Route 66), Katharine Ross (The Stepford Wives), Patrick Wayne (The Searchers), Phillip Alford (To Kill a Mockingbird), Denver Pyle (Dukes of Hazzard), George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke), James Best (Dukes of Hazzard).

Kino Lorber transfered Shenandoah to Blu0ray in 1080p in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The Audio track is a DTS-HD Master audio 2.0. The picture quality is very good. There is some small imperfections in the picture. But they are so minor most people will miss them. As for the audio track, it sounds clear with no signs of pops or hiss. I think this is a beautiful looking print of this beautiful film.

Now for the special features. Kino Lorber has added a very insightful audio commentary featuring film historians Michael F. Blake, C. Courtney Joyner, and Constantine Nasr. There is also a super 8MM short film starring James Stewart called "The Defiant Virginian" there is no audio, but it is super cool to have this on the Blu-ray. Than finally there is trailers for Shenandoah and many other James Stewart films including; Made for Each Other, Broken Arrow, No Highway in the Sky, Bend of the River, Thunder Bay, Night Passage, The Rare Breed. Finally two other trailers The Way West and The Devil’s Brigade.

This was my first time watching this western and I have to say I really enjoyed this one. I love seeing James Stewart. He is so believable in his roles and this one is no different. He really draws you into the old west. And you feel you are right there along with him for this ride.

So if you love James Stewart or Westerns or both. I highly recommend this Kino Lorber Studio Classic Blu-ray release of Shenandoah. You can order your copy of this Blu-ray by heading over to Amazon.com today.
