The Norseman (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Lee Majors was a TV Icon. In the 70s he was rebuilt into the Six Million Dollar man as Steven Austin. Than in the 80s he transitioned into a Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy. But between these two shows in 1978 he starred in the action/adventure film The Norseman.

Now Kino Lorber and Scorpion releasing is giving this MGM cult movie a Blu-ray. No doubt cult film fans are going to be jumping to get there hands on this release.

After his father, King Eurich, goes missing on an expedition, Viking prince Thorvald (Lee Majors) launches a journey to find him. He is joined on his journey by his loyal friend, Ragnar (Cornel Wilde), and the eccentric mystic Death Dreamer (Jack Elam). Thorvald sails to America where he discovers that a local Native American tribe has captured the king and his men. Thorvald and his crew attempt to free their kinsmen, aided by a beautiful native woman named Winnetta (Susie Coelho).

The film is a well told story. The action scenes are exciting and very believable. But I have to be honest seeing Lee Majors as a viking is a bit strange. Jack Elam shines with his gravely voice and long beard. He is perfect in this Viking world. The slow motion shots remind me of the Six Million Dollar Man show, which made the kid in me rejoice.

On a side note football fans will be interested to see NFL Hall of Famers Fred Biletnikoff and Deacon Jones in the cast. Finally the score by Jamie Mendoza-Nava is a perfect enhancement to this film.

The film has been transferred in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio and in English DTS-HD 2.0 mono audio. The film looks sharp and the colors are extremely vibrant. There is just the perfect amount of film grain. The audio is crisp and clear. It really is an impressive transfer.

Now for special features this release English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. There is also
trailers for The Norseman, Eye of the Tiger, The Time Travelers, Killer Fish, Tintorera and The Barbarians.

Now this release is for a very niche audience. The average film fan will probably not be interested in this. But fans of Lee Majors, 70s cinema, viking action films or cult films will find a lot of pleasure in this one.

So if you would a magnificent looking copy of The Norseman you can not go wrong with this Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. I highly recommend you can head over to Amazon.com and get your copy today.
