Westerns back in the day were all the gunfighter in the white hats aka good guys facing off against the gunfighter in the black hat aka the bad guys. Somewhere along the way, the pure line in the sand was blurred and we got more complex storylines. No true black and white, good and evil.
Well, writer Shea Sizemore and director Brent Christy gave us a film that seemed to take us back to the more classic style of good versus evil, but yet with a little bit of complexity as well! The film was entitled The Warrant. This film is now available on DVD and Digital from Mill Creek Entertainment.
The Warrant follows the story of two men. John Breaker a sheriff in Linn County, Missouri and Virgil St. Denis, aka "The Saint," was a soldier who served under Breaker during the Civil War. While Breaker enforces the law, "The Saint" breaks the law with his group of bandits. They are determined to disrupt the Union Army's supply lines going from the North to the South for the purposes of Reconstruction.
Now The Saint has a $10,000 bounty on his head. John's son Cal has come home to ask his father for his help in bringing The Saint to justice and collect that bounty. But hat lies ahead is a violent all-out war that could cost the father and son duo their lives.
John Breaker is played by Neal McDonough (Damian Darhk in the Arrow) and The Saint is played by Casper Van Dien. These two characters are the personification of good versus evil. But there are reasons for The Saint's turn to the dark side. Both do a masterful job in their roles. But Neal McDonough is so good in this role, his portrayal reminds me of a John Wayne or a James Arness. I think Neal would be amazing in a lead role of a weekly western series like Gunsmoke.
The story is so well written and the direction is great. The action scenes are amazing. The entire cast is so believable. This film is an engaging had me hooked from the beginning. While this is a low budget western it the money was used so that the production doesn't feel low budget at all!
As for the DVD release the film is presented in widescreen format in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio is 5.1 Surround Sound. The film looks and sounds incredible. As for bonus features, there is behind the scenes featurette and cast interviews.
So if you loved a story of good versus evil. A good journey into the past in western form. I think you'll be impressed with The Warrant. To get your copy of this DVD head over to Amazon.com or your local DVD provider and pick up your copy today.
