The Mysterious Mr. M

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the first half of the 20th century movie serials we extremely popular. These were 15 to 20 minute chapters in a huge film arc that when put together played out an epic story. This
was an easy way to ensure moviegoers to come back every week for another round of entertainment.

VCI Entertainment along with MVD Visual has been bringing the classic film fanatics their fill of great classic entertainment. Now the next release is the 1946 movie serial The Mysterious Mr. M now on Blu-ray for the first time ever.

The serial follows A federal investigator who is called in by authorities to assist in solving the case of the disappearance of Dr. Kittridge, a noted submarine inventor. Kittridge was kidnaped and accidentally killed when injected with a new drug Hypnotrene, on orders from a maniacal murderer known only as the Mysterious Mr. M.

This is a 13 chapter mystery serial. The chapter breaks includes;
  1. When Clocks Chime Death
  2. Danger Downward
  3. Flood of Flames
  4. The Double Trap
  5. Highway Execution
  6. Heavier than Water
  7. Strange Collision

  10. The Human Time-bomb
  11. The Key to Murder

This is a really well produced serial. Starting with the screenplay by Joseph F. Poland and Barry Shipman to the direction by Lewis D. Collin and Vernon Keays. And the awesome acting of Richard Martin, Pamela Blake and Dennis Moore. There is also a pretty good supporting cast of Virginia Brissac, Danny Morton, Edmund MacDonald, Byron Foulger, Jane Randolph and Jack Ingram.

Now maybe some of you have seen this serial on the internet. But let me tell you you have never seen it like this. This serial has been restored in 2K from the original 35mm Film masters and they look and sound absolutely stunning on Blu-ray.

They are thankfully presented in their original full-screen format 1.37:1 aspect ratio. No stretching of the picture. The audio is in 2.0 English Dolby. As a special bonus, there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing which is always a nice touch.

If you are a fan of mystery serials I highly recommend this one from 1946 and this release is an absolute must-own if you want this serial in the best quality possible.
