The Human Monster (1939) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

When Bela Lugosi first uttered those infamous words "I bid you welcome" he would forever be known as the vampire Dracula. Bela tried so hard to break from the type casting, but the die was cast.

Bela Lugosi played many amazing b-horror films over his career. And in 1939 eight years after he first wore the cape, he would take the lead in a mystery film entitled The Human Monster. Well, the fine folks at VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual are bringing this Bela cult classic to Blu-ray.

In London, philanthropist Dr. Orloff (Lugosi) volunteers his services at a home for blind men. A series of drownings has Scotland Yard baffled. There seems to be one common denominator, the victims were all heavily insured through the same insurance company. Is this just a coincidence or is something sinister afoot? You'll have to see the film to find out.

While this film may not be Bela Lugosi's greatest film entry, Bela truly shines in his role. The supporting cast is top-notch and the screenplay was very well adapted from "the eyes of London" by Edgar Wallace.

The film has been restored from the original 35mm film print in 2K. The transfer on this Blu-ray looks pretty amazing in comparison to other releases I have seen. I am very impressed with this restoration. VCI Entertainment deserve a lot of credit.

The film is presented in its original full-screen format in and mono audio. There are English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. But as good as the film looks and sounds there is a good amount of bonus features in this release.

> Audio commentary by noted film historian, author, and Bela Lugosi expert, Gary D. Rhodes
> Audio Commentary by film historian David del Valle and author, screenwriter and 'monster kid', Phoef Sutton
> Liner notes written by film historian Patrick McCabe

>  Extensive Poter and Photo gallery
> Original U.S. Re-Issue Theatrical Trailer
This is a really good Blu-ray release for classic film fans. VCI Entertainment has been doing an amazing job with their Blu-ray releases here recently. I always look forward to their newest releases.
