It's been 30 years since this film hit theaters. Arrow Video sees this huge anniversary and has restored and released this classic in 4k UltraHD.
Synopsis: Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future) stars as Frank Bannister, a small-town psychic who uses his ghostly friends to con unsuspecting locals - until a series of mysterious deaths points to a far darker force. Racing to uncover the truth, Frank realizes he's the only person capable of stopping a malevolent spirit from claiming more victims... even if it means facing his own haunted past. As macabre as it is mischievous, The Frighteners blends chilling suspense with offbeat humor and groundbreaking visual effects. Stylish, spooky, and full of heart, this cult classic continues to thrill from beyond the grave.
When you get right down to brass tacks, The Frighteners is a film that doesn't have a genre persay. There is elements of horror, scifi, comedy and even romance. But one thing is for sure this film is a ton of fun.
Michael J. Fox is gold in his final film before he would transition to TV again with Spin City. The supporting cast is perfect as well. John Astin (Gomez on TV's Addams Family) plays The Judge a zombie Old West gunslinger. Though you would never know it. That is how amazing the make-up work was.
Then there are the computer effects. Before Jurassic Park, CGI was clunky to say the least. But Peter Jackson's team brought stellar computer effects to this film. These are so well produced it is seamless to the film.
Arrow Video has restored The Frighteners in 4K from the original camera negative. The result is one of the finest-looking versions of this film that I have ever witnessed. Watching The Frighteners in UltraHD is a feast for the eyes.
