A swashbuckler is a heroic archetype in European adventure literature that is typified by the use of a sword and chivalric ideals. The Sprocket Vault brings us a new double feature featuring swashbuckling adventure though this could easily have been called The Richard Clarke double feature he is in both of these features.

Our Rating System:

Tales of Robin Hood (1951) A ruthless tax collectors oppress the simple folk Nottinghamshire. But, deep in the shadows of Sherwood Forest, a new hero is born: Robin Hood a sharp-witted swashbuckler who with his Merry Men steals from the rich and gives to the poor. This film was  originally produced as a TV pilot, but was released theatrically the next year. (Black and white - full screen - 60 minutes) ***

The Black Pirates (1954) Viloent pirates land in a Latin American town in search of buried treasure, they soon learn that a church was built over the spot. The pirate chief enslaves the townspeople and forces them to dig for it. But the pirates have not calculated for the human spirit! This movie was filmed in San Salvador and the script was written by Star Trek producer Fred Freiberger. It also stars Lon Chaney Jr. as the priest.  (Color - widescreen - 74 minutes) ***

This DVD presents these two action adventures in beautiful quality. Yes The Black Pirates film does have some picture issues. There are a couple blurry frame and some line in the picture but when you think that most of the films from this era were not taken care of the picture is remarkably beautiful! Than the audio is crisp and clean. Tales of Robin Hood picture and audio is absolutely amazingly crisp and clean.

The bonus features on this DVD include reenactment interviews with Robert L. Lippert, Jr. and Robert Clarke by Tom Weaver, as well as the original trailer to “The Black Pirates”.
