The Front: 4K UltraHD Review

In the 1950s Hollywood was inundated with the Communist "witch hunts". Many producers, directors and actors were blacklisted during this time. Some never recovered from their blacklisting. In 1976 a group of blacklisted people joined forces to produce a film about said, blacklisting. The film was entitled The Front.

The Front is celebrating it's golden anniversary. 50 years ago this year The Front was released in theaters. Now Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are giving this film an UltraHD release for the first time ever.

Synopsis: Woody Allen stars as Howard Prince -- a small-time restaurant cashier, part-time bookie and full-time loser -- who is induced by a writer-friend to "front" for the submission of his TV scripts when he is blacklisted as an alleged subversive. Howard is soon "fronting" for other writers. He becomes a celebrity and is lionized as television's most brilliant and prolific young author. But when popular TV comic Hecky Brown (Zero Mostel) is blacklisted and his career is threatened, he agrees to keep Howard under surveillance. Howard is then summoned to appear before an investigative committee and his stand before them brings about an unexpected dramatic conclusion.

This was a very personal project for screenwriter Walter Bernstein, director Martin Ritt, and actors Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, and Lloyd Gough as they all had suffered blacklisting. Woody Allen brings his antsy performance to this film. It kind of doesn't help a whole lot. Zero Mostel is great as in everything he does. The story tries to be eloborate but yet didn't quite keep me invested. It was not a bad film, but could have been better. But The Front is an improtant film to remember what many had to suffer during this time in history.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have transferred The Front to 4K UltraHD in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for subtitles in English, French and English SDH.

The Front looks pretty impressive in 4K. The UltraHD picture is super clean. The colors are bright and vibrant and the audio is clear as a bell. As for bonus features included in this release. It is a bit on the skimpy side.

* Audio Commentary by actress Andrea Marcovicci and Film Historians Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman
* Theatrical Trailer

In addition to the crisp and clean film, insightful audio commentary and trailer. Sony added a digital copy of The Front that you can redeem on Movies Anywhere. I like when the digital copies are included. of course for me I love the physical copy, but it is nice to have the digtal just incase you are away from your collection on vacation or something and want to see a film. Very cool bonus feature.
