Red Dust Blu-ray Review (Warner Archive Collection) – Clark Gable & Jean Harlow Pre-Code Classic

Jean Harlow and Clark Gable starred together in six films during their time at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Their films spanned from 1931 to 1937. Their first film was The Secret Six (1931), which would go on to make Hold Your Man (1933), China Seas (1935), Wife vs. Secretary (1936), and Saratoga (1937).

Their second film, however, is considered by most to be their best film collaboration. That film was 1932's Red Dust. Warner Archive Collection has restored this film and released it on Blu-ray for the first time ever.

Synopsis: Vantine, a prostitute on the run from Saigon authorities, is vulnerable yet tough. From the first moment she takes refuge on the plantation run by Carson, he sizes her up as an easy mark for his virile charm. But when a research engineer and his elegant wife, Barbara, appear on the scene, Carson falls hard for the beautiful Barbara, discarding Vantine as nothing more than a "cute little trick." The steamy rivalry between the women soon boils over into a jealous rage -- with violent consequences.

Red Dust features a great screenplay with a wonderful mix of drama, comedy, and romance. The film features strong performances led by Clark Gable and Jen Harlow. Depression era, film audiences could not get enough of these kinds of films, and it is understandable. The film still holds up all these years later.

Warner Archive Collection has released Red Dust on Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive gathered together the best elements they could find and patched this film together, restoring it to the best quality possible. There is no denying that some of the materials used are further down the generational ladder. This leads to shots where the picture quality doesn't quite match up. But all in all, the picture quality is very, very good.

In addition to a good quality film restoration, Warner Archive Collection added some cool bonus features on this Blu-ray disc. Take a look at what is included.

Special Features:
* Two M-G-M Technicolor shorts
- Over the Counter (1932) In this musical short, the son of a department store owner replaces the regular sales girls with chorus girls.
- Wild People (1932) The Globe Broadcasting Company does a radio broadcast from Dutch New Guinea, with the aborigines as performers.
* Audio only Gulf Screen Guild Theater 10/6/1940 broadcast with Clark Gable and Ann Southern
* Original (Spanish) Theatrical Trailer

The MGM movie shorts are always a great watch. These are more than just filler; they really are entertaining historical films that deserve to be preserved for future generations. I like the edition of the Spanish language trailer, but I would have liked an English language one as well.

If you have enjoyed Clark Gable's performance in Mogambo, then it's time to see his original performance in Red Dust. And the best way to see it is on Blu-ray. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today.
