Mogambo (1953) Warner Archive Blu-ray Review – John Ford Directs Clark Gable in African Adventure Classic

Among the directors in cinema history, John Ford stands among the greats. AFI ranked Clark Gable #7 in their list of the top male actors of all time. Now, when you think of these two greats, they must have worked together multiple times. Well, you would be wrong. They worked together only once.

In 1953, John Ford gathered an all-star cast together for the adventure film Mogambo. Warner Archive Collection has come in and restored this film and given it a Blu-ray release, complete with bonus features.

Synopsis: A Broadway showgirl stranded in the African jungle; Eloise is more suited for the urban jungle. Yet one look at safari guide Victor Marswell and she knows exactly where she wants to be. Times change but the fun remains when Clark Gable portrays man's man Victor in a sassy, vibrant remake of Gable's 1932 hit Red Dust.

It is very rare that the same actor stars in a remake of a successful film they starred in to begin with. But Clark Gable did just that with Mogambo. Red Dust is a superior film. But Mogambo is a very entertaining feature. Plus, audiences are treated to the directorial prowess of the great John Ford.

Clark Gable is still Clark Gable even as a more mature actor. Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly are spectacular in this love triangle. It is still mind-blowing to me that Grace Kelly, three years after this film was made, would leave Hollywood for good and become the Princess of Monaco.

Warner Archive has transferred Mogambo to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio, complete with side mattes. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive as always does a tremendous job with the restoration of this film. The picture is crisp and clean with no digital artifacts or film damage that I witnessed. And the colors, WOW! Amazing! This is a beautiful-looking picture. But that is not all this Blu-ray has going for it. Take a look at the bonus features included.

Special Features:
* MGM Tom and Jerry Cartoon "Just Ducky"
* M-G-M Fitzpatrick Traveltalks Short: Land of the Ugly Duckling"
* Original Theatrical Trailer

The Traveltalks are always a wonderful time capsule, and who doesn't enjoy a good Tom and Jerry cartoon? Watching these bonus features before the feature with a big bowl of popcorn is like going to the movies from the comfort of your couch.

If you love the films of John Ford and enjoy Clark Gable, then this one and only collaboration is a must-own for your collection. And there truly is no better way to own it than this Warner Archive Blu-ray. Head over to
