Edward G. Robinson and George Raft made careers out of playing gangsters. In 1941 director Raoul Walsh brought these two together along with other great actors and actresses for a drama unlike anything audiences had seen up to that time.
When you want a classic film to be restored and released on Blu-ray you call Warner Archive Collection. And Manpower has now been released on Blu-ray thanks to Warner Archive. Let's take a closer look at this release.
Synopsis: Hank McHenry and Johnny Marshall are members of a road crew employed by a Los Angeles power company. They have one of the most dangerous of jobs. They battle the elements to restore electrical power. But their friendship gets strained when the lovely Fay Duval (Marlene Dietrich) enters the picture.
Raoul Walsh created a tremendous working class drama that features a love triangle. The cast delivers such strong performances, lead by Edward G. Robinson and George Raft. The story is a wonderful fast-paced with great cinematography.
Warner Archive Collection has transferred Manpower to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This transfer is sourced from a 4K scan of the original nitrate camera negative. What results is a sharp image with a well-balanced blacks and whites picture. Warner Archive kept the film grain and there is no scratches or specks of dirt that I witnessed while watching this film. The audio track is clear as a bell, really enhancing the musical score by Adolph Deutsch.
Special features:
Classic Warner Bros. Cartoons:
* Snowtime or Comedy
* Joe Glow the Firefly
In all honesty, the bonus features are a bit skimpy here. But two classic cartoons are better than nothing at all. Both cartoons were directed by Chuck Jones in 1941. Snowtime or Comedy features two dogs chasing a bone in the snow. While the black and white Joe Glow the Firefly follows a firefly with a miner's lighted helmet as he explores a camper's tent.
Warner Archive, as always, does a tremendous job in restoring this classic drama to pristine condition. The Blu-ray could have been made better with a few more bonus features, but is still a worthwhile addition to anyone's classic movie library.
If you love the films of Edward G. Robinson, George Raft or Marlene Dietrich, why not get the best of all the world with Manpower. If you would like to add Manpower on Blu-ray to your collection, head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today.
