Vampire Zombies from Space on Blu-ray – Campy Sci-Fi Horror Review

Watching 50s sci-fi in this generation is a blast. They were not made campy, but after so many decades have passed. Knowledge, technology, filmmaking advances and all these films often are just hilarious pieces of cinema.

Mike Stasko co-wrote and directed a new movie that is truly a love letter of a film to the 50s sci-fi horror genre. The film is entitled Vampire Zombies from Space. Well, with that title you know you are in for a campy good time.

Synopsis: In 1957, a quiet town is turned upside down when Dracula returns with a new plan to take over the world-by raising an army of vampire zombies from outer space. As the undead spread through the streets, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop the invasion before it's too late.

This film has a real "Plan 9 from Outer Space" vibe to it. Okay that is not meant as a jab. Plan 9 is considered the worst film in history, but it is so campy, that it is just a lot of fun to watch. And that is exactly what Vampire Zombies is.

When you watch Vampire Zombies you are going to see some familiar faces as well in this film. You see a 'weird' appearance by Lloyd Kauffman. He is best known as the man behind Troma Entertainment. But the most amazing one would have to be Vampira played by Judith O'Dea. She played Barbara in Romero's original classic The Night of the Living Dead. That is awesome to see her in this film.

Cleopatra Entertainment have transferred Vampire Zombies from Space to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in widescreen format. There are two English audio tracks a 5.1 surround sound and a 2.0 stereo track. Finally, there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The film is in black and white, as it should be. Now this may sound strange, but I think this film looks too crisp and too sharp on Blu-ray. I think this film would have been a bit more 50s b-horror if it had some dirt and debris and scratches.

Blu-ray Bonus Features:
* Audio Commentary
* Deleted Scenes
* Promotional Clips
* Slide Show
* Trailers

For me a good audio commentary is always a great bonus. These take us deeper into the production and give the listener more details on how and why certain parts of the film were shot. The addition of the deleted scenes and promos are also a nice bonus.

Now let's be honest here. Vampire Zombies from Space is not a film everyone is going to be in love with. This is a film for people who love 1950s schlock cinema. But those that do will defiantly get some enjoyment out of this film. Just don't expect too much. Grab some popcorn and a soda and enjoy the camp.
