Gary Cooper is a Hollywood Legend. He is probably best known for his westerns including one of the best westerns of all time 'High Noon'. But He did more than just westerns, he starred in the war drama 'Sargent York' and he portrayed the baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig in 'The Pride of the Yankees'.

In late 1952 after the release of High Noon Gary Cooper would return to the old west for the film Springfield Rifle. But isn't just a normal western. This western with a cool hint of espionage! Warner Archive Collection have restored and released this classic western on Blu-ray.

Synopsis: Academy Award winner Gary Cooper stars as a Union officer in the United States' Civil War who goes undercover--pretending to be court-martialed--to uncover who is stealing army horses and selling them to the South before they can hijack a delivery of the new Springfield Rifle. While delivering a shipment of horses desperately needed to mount a big offensive in the United States' Civil War, Union Major Lex Kearny (Cooper) is overwhelmed by a band of Confederate raiders. Rather than risk the lives of his men, he sounds retreat, leaving the precious cargo behind--for which he faces a court-martial. But this is only a ploy to send Kearny underground to find who has been stealing horses from the Union Army. Kearny's mission remains so secret that even his wife (Phyllis Thaxter) believes he has gone renegade, and she surrenders evidence that implicates him as a Southern spy. Now, can Kearny stop the gang of traitorous horse thieves before he is sentenced to death for espionage?

Springfield Rifle will probably not be at the top of anyone's list of the favorite Gary Cooper films, but that doesn't mean it isn't an enjoyable experience. Gary Cooper and Phyliss Thaxter performances are top notch as well as the rest of the cast. And the direction of André De Toth brings real style to this western. It is an unforgettable experience.

Warner Archive Collection has restored and transferred Springfield Rifle to Blu-ray in 1080p and it is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The Audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive Collection really impressed me with the quality of this restoration and transfer. The colors are gorgeous the picture is crisp and there is the wonderful film grain. The audio is clear as a bell. For a film that is almost 75 years old seeing it on this Blu-ray you would never know it!

A wonderful looking transfer is not all that is included here. Take a look at the bonus features that Warner Archive Collection included on this Blu-ray disc.

* So You Want to Enjoy Life (1952) Joe McDoakes hears the doctor say he has a short time to live, so he goes on a spending spree, then realizes he is going to have to pay off these debts.

Two Classic Cartoons
- Feed the Kitty (1952) A bulldog is infatuated with a cute little kitten and tries to keep her hidden from his human owner.
- Rabbit’s Kin (1952) A young rabbit is being hunted by Pete Puma, it's Bug to the rescue! Bugs than teaches the young bunny lessons on heckling.

For me there is nothing better on these Warner Archive Blu-rays than when they add the bonus cartoons and shorts. I have been a fan of the Joe McDoakes shorts ever since I saw them on TCM. These are such fun little features. And who doesn't love classic cartoons. So, these bonus features make this release simply amazing!
