In the history of cinema, you will find few directors that impacted film more than that of the legendary Alfred Hitchcock. His career spanned from the 1920s to the 1970s over 50 years. From silent to talkies, from black and white to color and full screen and widescreen. He films have seen it all!
Hitchcock's films are studied in film schools and directors feels if they can have half the filmography as a director as he had they will leave their mark. While he never won an Academy Award for best director, which is insane to even think about, he was nominated five times; Rebecca (1940), Lifeboat (1944), Spellbound (1945), Rear Window (1954), and Psycho (1960).
Today (March 12th, 2025) is National Alfred Hitchcock Day! Now you may ask... Why? That is a good question! And it i one that no one seems to have an answer for. As Alfred Hitchcock was born August 13th,1899 and died April 29th, 1980. So, it is not associated with that. Whatever the reason no film maker has ever been more deserving of their own day that Alfred Hitchcock!
He is known as the Master of Suspense. Bring us such amazing visual experiences as that of Vertigo, thrill a minute rides like North by Northwest and terrifying nightmares like Psycho.
But Hitchcock has a dry wit that was perfect for television. So, he would host two TV series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Many were introduced to Hitchcock from his fun intros and exits to these shows. He was truly unforgettable.
What is the best way to celebrate National Hitchcock Day? There could be no better way than to watch some of this films and TV shows. After all that is what he dedicated his life to do was produce entertainment. And he left behind a legacy of entertaining cinema and TV like none other.
