The master of suspense. A director that aspiring filmmakers study. Of course we are talking about Alfred Hitchcock. Never in the history of cinema has a director brought to the screen so many iconic films and scenes.
Who doesn't remember the case scene in North by Northwest. The shower scene in Psycho. The bird attack in The Birds and so many more. Warner Archive is giving us another suspenseful film on Blu-ray. That is 1950's Stage Fright.
The film follows actor Jonathan Cooper (Richard Todd) who is accused of murder. He insists that it was the famous actress and his lover Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich) who killed the victim, who just happened to be her husband.
Now on the run he asked for help from his friend Eve (Jane Wyman), also an actress. Eve is convinced that Jonathan is innocent, so she plays detective, assuming multiple disguises. But she may soon realize that everything she believed was a lie.
Stage Fright is an engaging, thrilling drama based on the 1947 novel Man Running by Selwyn Jepson. Alfred Hitchcock shows why he is a master filmmaker. He uses some of the most unique camera tricks in this film, they must be seen to be believed.
The cast in this film is pretty impressive with Jane Wyman hot off of her Academy Award winning performance in Jonny Belinda and Marlene Dietrich leading this cast. Richard Todd is a great choice as the man on the run. But one of the best parts of this cast was the supporting role of Alastair Sim, he starred in my favorite version of A Christmas Carol as Ebenezzer Scrooge.
Stage Fright has been transferred in 1080p from a brand new 4k scan of an original camera negative. The film is in the original full screen format in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. The picture quality of this transfer is nothing short of amazing. It is truly a gorgeous scan.
This Blu-ray release not only has a remarkable looking film transfer, but there are some cool bonus features as well. Included on this Blu-ray is a 3 minute trailer and a near 20 minute documentary where historians and filmmakers talk about the making of this Hitchcock classic.
