Hong Kong Hong Kong (1983) Blu-ray Review

When most film fans think of Hong Kong cinema they think of action-packed kung fu movies. And understandably so, as they are totally awesome! And 88 Films have been releasing some simply amazing Blu-rays of Kung Fu cinema. But what about something a bit different?

88 Films has come through on that! In 1983 the Shaw Brothers brought Clifford Choi in to direct a drama that was far from the kung fu genre. A film about love and dreams. That film was perfectly entitled "Hong Kong Hong Kong". Now 42 years after the films initial release come deluxe Blu-ray release from the good folks at 88 Films!

Synopsis: There's much more to Hong Kong cinema than kung fu flicks: Hong Kong, Hong Kong is a social realist drama with a huge heart, following two lovers dreaming of a better life: Man Si Sun (Cherie Chung, An Autumn's Tale) is an illegal immigrant from the mainland while Kong Yuen Sang (Alex Man, Rich and Famous) is looking for glory in the kick-boxing ring.

As cool as the kung fu films are, it was kind of refreshing to see drama. Even though it is pretty apparent where they got their inspiration from for this film. There is no doubt this is Shaw Brothers' version of Rocky. But it is still very entertaining!

The film was so well received that it was nominated for many awards and even won the
Golden Horse award for Best Screenplay. For foreign film fans and sports fans in general this is defiantly one film that should be seen!

88 Films have transferred this film to Blu-ray in High Definition 1080p and the film is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a
Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the newly translated English Subtitles.

88 Films has done it again with another wonderful looking Blu-ray transfer. The picture is crisp and the colors are bright and vibrant. The Cantonese language track is clean. There is no digital artifacts or audio anomalies that I witnessed. A very impressive transfer. But that is not all that is included on this release.

Bonus Material

* Alex Mann on Hong Kong Hong Kong by Fred Ambroisine

When it comes to 88 Films releases, I have said it before, and I'll say it yet again. I simply love the addition of the artwork! I love to have the new artwork slipcover and have the original Hong Kong poster on the Blu-ray insert. When you remove the slipcover, you see the wonderful artwork on the inside.... so cool! And how cool is it to get a two-sided poster!

If you love 88 Films releases as much as I do, I highly recommend "Hong Kong Hong Kong" it is defiantly different, but amazingly cool! Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and pick up your copy of this Blu-ray today!
