What resulted from those two days was a horror comedy like nothing we had ever seen before and that was "Little Shop of Horrors". Well, in 1982 the cult classic film was made into a Off-Broadway Musical and then 4 years later the musical was brought to the big screen. Now as we approach the 40th anniversary of this film's release Warner Brothers Home Entertainment is releasing the director's cut of Little Shop of Horrors on DVD.
Synopsis: Located on skid-row is Mushnik's flower shop. Working there and dreaming of escaping skid row is Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis). Seymour bought a plant from a Chinese flower shop during a solar eclipse. He names the unusual plant Audrey II after his fellow flower shop worker and crush Audrey (Ellen Greene). One day Audrey II get a taste of human blood and wants more. it's up to Seymour to supply!
As fun as Corman's original production was and still is, this musical really amps up the fun. Frank Oz and his team create an unforgettable film and a simply unbelievable Audrey II. Rick Moranis is perfect as Seymour, Ellen Greene is great as Audrey. R&B legend Levi Stubbs provides his wonderful deep rich voice of Audrey II. But in addition, we see performances by comedy legends Steve Martin. Jim Belushi, John Candy, Bill Murray.
The Director's Cut found on this DVD release features an alternate ending that probably few knew ever existed. This ending was not the happy ending we saw in the theatrical film but actually has a more epic ending to the film. I'm glad Warner Brothers decided to release this version of this film, so we can see what director Frank Oz wanted!
Warner Brothers Home Entertainment have transferred Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut to DVD and it is presented in widescreen format. The audio is a Dolby Digital track. This transfer is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts or audio anomalies. But this DVD has some cool bonus features added to this disc.
Bonus Features:
* Optional commentary by Frank Oz on the Director's cut 20 minute alternate ending
* Frank Oz and Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut
* A Story of Little Shop of Horrors
* Outtakes and Deleted scenes with optional commentary by Frank Oz
* Two Theatrical Trailers
The commentary by Frank Oz gives the viewer such insight behind his thought process in making Little Shop of Horrors. The featurette "A Story of Little Shop of Horrors" is a nice watch, and I always love outtakes and deleted scenes. Warner Brothers Home Entertainment really put a lot into this release, and I appreciate that!
The only real complaint I would have with this release is the fact that it is a made-on-demand DVD. I would have much preferred a pressed disc than a burned one. As we all probably know burned discs have a shorter life span than those of pressed disc. But if this DVD is taken care of it should last quite a long time.
Little Shop of Horrors is tons fun. It is truly an experience you will never forget, and the Director's Cut is even more fun than the theatrical version. So, if you would like to see Frank Oz's original vision of Little Shop of Horrors and you missed the Blu-ray release over a decade ago well you can add this DVD in your collection head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Little Shop of horrors receives......
