Monster from the Ocean Floor (1954) Film Masters Blu-ray Review

There are few that have made more of an impact on budget film making than that of the legendary Roger Corman. The films that he produced and directed during his career have become cult classics.

The Film Masters have been releasing some amazing Blu-ray releases and some of them feature the amazing films of Roger Corman. We saw the double feature Blu-rays of The Terror / Little Shop of Horrors and Beast from Haunted Cave / Ski Troop Attack. Now it is time for another Corman cult classic. This time it is 1954's Monster from the Ocean Floor.

Synopsis: Julie, an American on vacation in Mexico, spots a giant, one-eyed amoeba rising from the ocean, but when she tries to warn others, no one believes her... or do they? Julie persists in her mission to help the local townspeople, but the closer she gets to unearthing the monster, the more danger awaits!

One thing was for sure whether directing or just producing Roger Corman knew how to get the most out of his productions. And even though he did not direct this film, Wyott Ordung took to the director's chair for this creature feature, you can see Corman's fingerprints in this film. The film is a bit talky for a Corman production, and not much on the 'creature' of this feature, but still a fun watch.

The screenplay was written by Bill Danch who is probably best known for writing episodes of classic TV including the awesome 1970s superhero show Shazam! There are not real big stars found in this film, but that actually works, as it makes this film a little more real. But while Roger Corman didn't direct this film, look for him in front of the camera as Tommy.

Monster From the Ocean Floor has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and a Dolby Digital. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This transfer is not just any ordinary transfer. This transfer is sourced from a brand new 4k scan from original 35mm archival elements. The picture quality this Corman production is really tremendous. It is a crisp and clean looking picture. To say I was impressed by this new 4K scan would be an understatement. This transfer must be experienced to be appreciated! A picture just doesn't do it justice.

What I always look forward to with these Film Masters Blu-rays is the wonderful Ballyhoo productions. I really enjoyed their featurette about Bob Baker, it is wonderfully produced. The inclusion of the archival interview with Roger Corman is a great watch. And Tom Weaver's write-up in the booklet is an informative read.
