The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) Warner Archive Blu-ray Review

Peter Lorre is one of the most recognizable faces in classic Hollywood. His illustrious career brought us amazing performances in such fan favorites as The Maltese Falcon, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Arsenic and Old Lace and The Raven.

In 1946 Warner Brothers made a horror film, the only horror film they produced that decade. And Peter Lorre would join an amazing cast for the film "The Beast with Five Fingers". Now for the 78th anniversary of this film's release Warner Archive Collection have restored this film and released it on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Hilary Cummins (Lorre), the devoted secretary to wheelchair-bound piano virtuoso Francis Ingram (Victor Francen), has a passion for the occult. Poring through every book on the supernatural he can find in Ingram's vast library, Hilary begins to imagine strange and terrifying things. But after Ingram's tragic death, the line between reality and unimaginable terror is blurred as the severed hand from Ingram's corpse begins killing everyone in the villa!

Peter Lorre really shines here in this the final film of his Warner Brothers career. But there are also unforgettable performances by
Robert Alda and Andrea King. The special effects of the disembodied hand is top notch for 1940s cinema. Robert Florey directed a film filled with thrills, chills, fun and shocking twists that would impress The Twilight Zone.

Warner Archive has transferred The Beast with Five Fingers to Blu-Ray with a 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer is not just any transfer it is sourced from a new 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative.

The new 4K restoration brings this film to life. The black and white film looks crisp and clean on Blu-ray. There is no damage to this print that I could see, and the audio is clear with no hiss or pops. Warner Archive has done another tremendous job restoring this 40s horror gem to glorious quality. Along with a great restoration Warner Archive has added some great bonus features to this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.
