Intensely Independent: The Micro-Budget Films Of Blake Eckard: Synapse Films DVD Review

Not everyone that dreams of making films have the luxury of a Hollywood studio behind them and a huge budget of millions of dollars. But that doesn't stop these filmmakers from using their ingenuity and making there vision a reality.

One such filmmaker was Blake Eckard. Known for his micro-budget films. Now Synapse Films is known for giving cult and lesser know
films a chance to live on, on Blu-ray and DVD. Now they are going to highlight the film style of Blake Eckard with the DVD release of Intensely Independent.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!

***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Bubba Moon Face (2011)
After a newborn baby is dumped in his lap, Horton Bucks (Tyler Messner) finds himself at the center of a tangled web of familial malevolence in Bubba Moon Face. **

Coyotes Kill for Fun (2017)
A backwoods babysitter agrees to help an abused mother of two escape her dangerous boyfriend, but his brother is headed back to the area and he has vengeance on his mind. **

These films a raw and real and for mature audiences. When you think micro budget films, you think really bad films, but these are fairly well, written, well shot and well directed pieces of cinema.

These two films show Blake's ability to direct a decent film on no budget whatsoever! After watching these films it made me wonder what kind of a film he could have made if he had a sizable budget.

Synapse Films have transferred these two films to DVD. They are presented in widescreen format in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio on these two films are English Dolby Digital 2.0. These two transfers look pretty impressive for microbudget films. But two films is not all that is included on this DVD. There is some cool bonus features.

Bonus Materials
* Audio commentary on BUBBA MOON FACE
* JOST ON ECKARD - Video interview with indie film legend, Jon Jost
* Liner notes booklet

Jost on Eckard is an extremely good interview, defiantly worth a view. The audio commentary gives the viewer so much information about Bubba Moon Face. The the liner booklet features a huge write-up by Andrew Wyatt entitled "Blake Eckard: Rutted Gravel Roads Through Hell".

For me a double feature is enough to make a physical media release something to check out. But when you add the bonus features, it take the release to even better heights. Synapse Films really made this release something special.

Now to be totally honest this is not a release that I would consider a must own. This release is really for cinephiles. The average film fans that loves those big films are going to be disappointed with this release. But for fans that can appreciate the art of filmmaking. Will defiantly appreciate this release.
