The Abandoned (2006) Blu-ray Review

For me I love a good horror movie during the Halloween season. But for a lot of people horror movies are for any time of the year. That is a why physical media fans love when a new horror Blu-ray is released.

Unearthed Films have been releasing horror film Blu-rays to scratch that itch. We have seen films like The Sound of Summer, Calamity of Snakes, Deadgirl and many more. Well, now it is time for another Blu-ray release. This time it is 2006's The Abandoned.

In 1966, somewhere in Russia, a wounded woman drives a truck to an isolated farm with two babies. Forty years later, the film producer Marie Jones leaves her daughter in California and travels back to her home land in the wilderness of Russia. Marie is one of the children and had received a phone call from the notary public Andrei Misharin, who told her where the farm of her family is located. Marie arrives at the abandoned house and meets the stranger Nicolai, who tells her that he had also received a call from Misharin and he is her twin brother. Weird things happen in the house and Marie and Nicolai are haunted by zombie-like ghosts of themselves. Further, they find that they are trapped in the house and cannot leave the place.

The Abandoned really stands out because of its eerie atmosphere, magnificent visuals, and great performances by Anastasia Hille and Karel Roden. But to be honest the story can be a bit muddy, and it tends to be slow in some places.

Now today's horror audiences want their scare fast and often. The Abandoned is not that kind of film. But one thing is for sure director Nacho Cerdá has crafted a film that will stay with you long after the end credits roll. Perhaps this is why this film has a cult following and why it was deemed a must for Unearthed Films to release on Blu-ray!

The Abandoned arrives on Blu-Ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English and Spanish subtitles. This film transfer is amazing. The picture is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts. The audio is clear with no audio anomalies. But Unearthed Films didn't stop at a great looking transfer, they added some great bonus features to this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.
