Blu-ray Review: Project: Alf (1996)

In the 1980s the world was introduced to an Alien. But no at this time I am not talking about Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, no! I'm talking about the hilarious, cat loving, furry alien named Gordon Shumway, who would affectionately be nickname ALF (Alien Life Form).

Alf would live on our TV screens for 4 amazing seasons. During it's run Alf would get animated series entitled Alf The Animated Series and Alf Tales. For those that have never seen Alf, shame on you! Treat yourself. You can watch Alf free on the Alf Streaming Channel on services like Sling TV, Pluto TV and others.

Alf the series ended in a cliffhanger. But six years later in 1996 a made-for-TV movie aired bringing back our favorite smart-mouthed alien for one more adventure, entitled Project Alf. Now 27 years after this film first took the air, we physical media fans have a chance to own this film on Blu-ray thanks to the good folks at Liberation Hall.

Six years ago, the space alien, ALF, was on his way back to his new home...When the Alien Task Force finally caught him. Now, the story continues to where the series ended. ALF is now protected by the Alien Task Force, but the leader wants to terminate ALF. So two officers decide to save ALF by taking ALF away from him. But the man the officers took ALF to wants to finally reveal ALF to the world. Which leads him to more danger.

Project Alf is an entertaining little film, with a pretty impressive cast! We see many familiar faces including: Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), William O'Leary (Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh), Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan), Jensen Daggett (Major League: Back to the Minors), Beverly Archer (Mama's Family), Charles Robinson (Night Court) and Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian) and many, many more. I think it is so cool to see Uncle Martin from the TV series My Favorite Martian in an Alf film! Only classic TV fans will get the importance his inclusion!

I remember watching this film as a kid, but I haven't seen it since than... until now! So when I watched this film after all these years I can honestly say I was entertained, but when put it alongside the TV Series it just feels off. I think what is truly missing in comparison to the the TV series is the family dynamic of The Tanners. Alf had people he cared for and people that cared for him. That was the charm of the show! Here is people just trying to help him, but not consider him family. But I still enjoyed the adventure!

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in widescreen format. The audio is a Dolby stereo track. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer is really impressive! The colors are vibrant and the picture is crisp and sharp as a tack. The audio is clear with no signs of hiss, pops or flutter. There is no signs of damage to this print!

But a gorgeous looking print is not all that this release has going for it, not by a long shot! Liberation Hall added some nice bonus features. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.

This is very nice commentary where Paul Fusco really lays in some cool information about the Alf character as well as others, the locations and cameos! This is a must hear commentary!

It is amazing to think that this film has not been seen on home video since the DVD release in 2005. Almost 20 years as past. I am so thankful that Liberation Hall have decided to give this film a home video release. I am so glad to say after so many years my Alf collection is complete! Hooray!

If you love Alf as much as I do, you need Project Alf in your collection. I highly recommend the Liberation Hall Blu-ray release, but it is also available on DVD if you prefer. Head over to

Out of 4 TV Sets (4 being the best) Liberation Hall's Blu-ray of Project ALF receives....
