Some films are entertaining! Some films shine a light on social issues. Than there are some films are just plain bizarre. In 1955 John J. Parker wrote, produced and directed one of the most bizarre films in early history. So shocking upon it's release, the film was initially banned by the New York State Film Board, who deemed it 'inhuman, indecent, and the quintessence of gruesomeness'.
Now the good folks at Cohen Film Collection and Kino Lorber have released this banned film on Blu-ray featuring a brand new 2K restoration. And no doubt fans of this film will be thrilled.
The film follows a young woman (Adrienne Barrett) who awakes from a nightmare and decides to go on a walk through skid row in Los Angeles, and plunges headlong into madness and murder.
The film used elements of mystery, horror, expressionism and film noir to bring this story to life. The film is mostly a silent film, as there is no dialogue! The soundtrack by George Antheil is a haunting one. It will stay with you long after your are finished watching this film.
The film is not always an easy one to follow I must say. But it stick with it is a satisfying experience. When watching this haunting piece of cinema I found myself thinking of Carnival of Souls.
Dementia is presented in 1080p and presented in it's original; 1.33:1. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track. Cohen Media Group's new 2K restoration of this film is truly a thing of beauty. When seeing the before and after restorations it is a night and day experience. Before the restoration the film looked washed and and pretty bad to say the least. But the new restoration looks dark and mood and crisp. It's a great restoration.
This Blu-ray not only includes the brand new restored version of this film, but Kino Lorber added some pretty cool bonus features in this release. Take a look at what is included.
