Fandango (1985) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Kevin Costner has had a pretty amazing career of films to his filmography. But before he would he would star in such great films as Dances with Wolves, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves or the cult classic WaterWorld, he would be apart of a coming of age film entitled Fandango. This would be Kevin Costner first starring role in a film.

Now the great folks at Warner Archive Collection have given this 80s favorite a Blu-ray release Kevin Costner fans have been wanting for a long time.

The film follows five college students known as The Groovers lead by Gardner Barnes (Kevin Costner, The Untouchables) and including, Phil Hicks (Judd Nelson, The Breakfast Club), Kenneth Waggener (Sam Robards, A.I. Artificial Intelligence) and Dorman (Chuck Bush, The Visual Bible: Matthew) and Lester (Brian Cesak) as they
embark on one final road trip across the Mexican border before facing up to uncertain futures. Their adventure sees them facing off against trains, planes and others trouble.

Fandango balances the fun with the dramatic and the film has a lot of heart as well. It explores the thoughts of young men as they faced the Vietnam War and the weight
 of not known whether they would come out of their alive. Costner was around 30 years of age at the time of this film and he looks a little weathered to be a college student, at least in my humble opinion.

Kevin Reynolds masterfully directed this film, he would go on to work with Kevin Costner with he afore mentioned Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Water World. He would also work with Costner on Dances with Wolves as well. Finally he would direct Kevin Costner one more time in
History's miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.

Fandango has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in it's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with the soundtrack being a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The picture is crisp and clean and the audio is very good. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Sadly the Blu-ray only sees the bonus feature of the Theatrical Trailer. I would have loved to see an audio commentary, interviews or some bonus classic cartoons. That would have made this disc so much better.

Fandango is a pretty fun and entertaining coming of age film. I think Kevin Costner fans are going to love this Blu-ray, but just don't expect tons of bonus features. Head over to Amazon and get your copy today.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Warner Archive Blu-ray release of Fandango receives...
