Dr. Phibes Double Feature {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

There are certain names that are synonymous with the horror genre. We are talking Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney and yes Price. Vincent Price was the dapper horror icon till later in his career when he began to embrace the campy horror.

In the 1970s Price had fully embraced the b horror movie genre. And in 1971 and 72 he played the cult classic horror character Dr. Phibes. Now the great folks at Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics have released this double feature on Blu-ray and I could not be happier. Take a look at what is included in this Blu-ray set.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An OK way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) Doctor, scientist, organist, and biblical scholar Anton Phibes seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for the death of his wife.  ***

Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) The vengeful doctor rises again, seeking the Scrolls of Life in an attempt to resurrect his deceased wife. ***

The Dr. Phibes films don't take themselves so serious. The totally embrace the campiness of the B horror genre. Some campy horror films are just bad, these are done so well that you will enjoy the campy horror and never think twice about how absurd the story may be.

Vincent Price is gold in anything he did and this is no different, but in these two films he is supported by some great actors including Joseph Cotten (Shadow of a Doubt), Peter Cushing (Horror of Dracula), Robert Quarry (Count Yorga, Vampire) and Terry Thomas (It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad world)

Now easily Kino Lorber could have put these two films on one Blu-ray disc with no real compressions issues, but they decided to give each film it's own dedicated disc. Both films have been transferred in 1080p and are in their original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

When watching these new Blu-ray discs I must say in comparison to the DVD releases. These movies look so clear and sharp on Blu-ray. The colors pop and the music is as clear as a bell. It is a very nice upgrade. But Kino Lorber didn't stop with just a great looking double feature. No sir, they added some great bonus features. Take a look at what is included.
