It was reported March 17, 2022 that Amazon has finalized the deal to purchase the massive MGM library. This is going to help put Amazon right in the fight with Disney Plus and Netflix for streaming supremely. The streaming field is becoming crowded with so many companies competing for the consumers dollars. We have seen huge deals with companies like Peacock buying WWE.
With Amazon buying MGM now they have a very impressive catalogue of classic films from Hollywood to the latest films. Over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows. Just some of the films include Rocky, Robocop, Legally Blonde and the iconic Bond... James Bond.
Now this deal is game changer for Amazon, putting them right in the mix for a good chunk of those streaming dollars. But the thing that came to my mind with this deal was what does this mean for Warner Archive.
As you may know Warner Brothers had a licensing deal with Paramount that gave them the rights to release some of the MGM titles on Blu-ray. And I must say I have been enjoying reviewing some of these amazing MGM release from Warner Archive. My feeling is that with this new deal that licensing agreement maybe null and void.
Streaming services are becoming the new hot car on the road. And the 'classics' such as physical media are being pushed aside. But Warner Archive has been on the front lines promoting physical media with impressive Blu-ray releases.
So without MGM films what will Warner Archive do? Well, Warner Brothers has just as an impressive library as MGM so Warner Archive is going to be fine even without the MGM library to pull from.
So I am looking for more great Blu-rays and DVD releases in the months and years to come from Warner Archive as they are the beacon of hope for classic film fans who love physical media.
