Ivanhoe (1952) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Elizabeth Taylor was a Hollywood icon. In November 2021 Warner Archive released an early film of Taylor's one of the great family dramas National Velvet.

But now it is time for another Elizabeth Taylor film this one starring Robert Taylor. Warner Archive is releasing on Blu-ray 1952's Ivanhoe based on the classic tale by Sir Walter Scott.

The film follows the exploits of British knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe (Robert Taylor) who is on a mission to free the kidnapped King of England, Richard the Lionheart (Norman Wooland). Ivanhoe must face the evil Prince John (Guy Rolfe) and the Norman warrior Brian de Bois-Guilbert (George Sanders), all the while dealing with the affections of the beautiful maidens Rowena (Joan Fontaine) and Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor).

Ivanhoe is a very entertaining adventure film. Now for film fans expecting high intense action scenes, this is the wrong film for you. This is a dramatic tale of knights, love triangles, politics of war and evil dictators.

Robert Taylor is great as Ivanhoe and the surrounding cast is just as great, including Elizabeth Taylor. Of course she is great in anything she did. The direction of Richard Thorpe is masterful and the costumes just transport you right on the front lines.

Ivanhoe has been transferred from a 4K scan of an original camera negative. The film is in 1080p in it's original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37:1. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. This print has been cleaned up and looks and sounds stunning. There is absolutely no signs of picture or audio damage at all!

Now Warner Archive added two really nice bonus features to this Blu-ray release. First off a HD version of the Theatrical Trailer. And than my favorite type of bonus a classic cartoon. We get the HD Version of the 1951 Oscar winning animated short Two Mouseketeers featuring Tom and Jerry.

This Warner Archive Blu-ray of Ivanhoe is a great release. A new restored version of the film and brand new HD trailer and cartoon makes this release very special. My hope is this release is just the beginning. I hope we will see the unoffical trilogy in the future, which include 1953's
Knights of the Round Table and 1955's The Adventures of Quentin Durward.

If you are a fan of those classic costume films from the 50s, this new Blu-ray of Ivanhoe is one we highly recommend for your collection. You can head over to Amazon.com and get your copy today.
