Noir Archive Volume 3 {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

I have always enjoyed a good dark moody film noir. And so did the masses in the 1950s. These kind of films were easy to make on a modest budget so film companies could churn these films out fast for a quick profit. And the audiences ate it up!

So Kit Parker Films in association with Mill Creek Entertainment have released Volume 1 and Volume 2 of 9 films noir each in High definition on Blu-ray. But now it's time for the next round, with Volume 3.

Our Rating System:
**** = Don’t Miss it!
*** = Worth a look.
** = An Ok way to spend an evening.
* = You haven’t missed anything.

Disc 1:

The Shadow on the Window (1956)
Three teenagers, break into an isolated farmhouse and murder its prosperous owner whose secretary, Linda Atlas, witnesses the crime. The three thugs decide to hold her hostage. ***

The Long Haul (1957)
An ex-serviceman moves to London to work as a truck driver. He becomes involved in a smuggling operation and falls for the girlfriend of a major crime figure. ***

Pickup Alley (1957) Frank McNally is
a narcotics smuggler, but he is being trailed through various European countries by U.S. drug enforcement agent. ***

Disc 2:

The Tijuana Story (1957)
A Mexican newspaper editor starts a crusade against drugs and vice in his border city. ***

She Played with Fire (1957)
An English insurance agent discovers a scam by his ex-girlfriend and her husband. ***

The Case Against Brooklyn (1958)
Rookie policeman Pete Harris (Darren McGavin) goes undercover to infiltrate a gambling ring in Brooklyn, N.Y.  ***

Disc 3

The Line-up (1958)
A mob killer recovers planted heroin from tourists arriving in San Francisco. ***

The Crimson Kimono (1959)
Two detectives seek a stripper's killer in the Japanese quarter of Los Angeles, but a love triangle threatens their friendship. ***

Man on a String (1960)
A US secret agent is sent to Berlin to pretend to be a spy for the USSR. ***

These nine noir films have some classic film actors in them including; Victor Mature, Darren McGavin, Ernest Borgnine, Betty Garrett, Kerwin Matthews, Eli Wallach and more.

All these films are presented in 1080p High Definition. The aspect ratio of 8 of the films are in 1.85:1 except for Pick-up Alley which is in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0. There are also English subtitles for each film for the hearing impaired. They look and sound better than I have seen them before.

As for the packaging the 3 Blu-ray discs are in a sturdy stack-able Blu-ray case. I love the art work having a scene from the film "The Lineup" at the forefront and the posters of each movie underneath, really nicely done. It's nice that each volume has a different color scheme.

As for the Blu-ray menus are easy to access just highlight the poster of the film and click and watch the film.
Very simple and very nice!

So if your a fan of Film Noirs as much as I am, this is a really great set to add to your collection! Head over to www.MVDShop.com or Amazon.com today.
