Critic's Choice (1963)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Warner Archive has being doing an amazing job bringing the movie fans releases we would never get to see except for the Made on Demand service. We have had the extreme pleasure of reviewing some of these releases including, George Washington Slept Here, V The Original Mini-series on Blu-ray, The Man from Atlantis, The Practice starring Danny Thomas and Most recently The Jetsons The First Season on Blu-ray.

Now Warner Archive is releasing a Bob Hope and Lucille Ball film! When you get two icons of comedy like this coming together to bring us a 60's comedy, it's one not to miss. Critic's Choice is getting its chance to shine on Made on Demand DVD.

Parker Ballantine (Bob Hope) is a
theater critic, would just loves to chew-up and spit out the reviews of bad plays. And there is a new play in town, there is only one problem. It was written by he wife Angela (Lucille Ball). Writing a bad review of her play could not only spell the end of the play's run, it could spell the end of their marriage. What happen? Find out when you watch this hilarious slapstick comedy.

This film was adapted from the stage play by Ira Levin and was directed by Don Weis.
As amazing as it is to see Bob Hope and Lucille Ball. The supporting cast is a stellar one as well. Included in this movie is Marilyn Maxwell, Rip Torn, Jessie Royce Landis, John Dehner and Jim Backus. Also keep your eyes open for a cameo by Soupy Sales.

Maybe 'Critic's Choice' is not Bob Hope and Lucille Ball's greatest film collaboration, that's up for debate. But for me this film is a great fun little escape film from the cares of everyday life. Let's face it with all the troubles and stuff this world is full of, sometimes we just need to escape to a simpler time.

As for this DVD release the film has been in it's original widescreen format and 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The film looks and sounds amazing. But Warner Archive didn't stop there with this release, oh no! They loaded this DVD with some really awesome bonus features. We get the Theatrical Trailer, Also an Oscar Nominated cartoon "Now hear this", and finally short comedy film featuring a very young Bob Hope entitled "Calling All Tars."

I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with this release. As I have been with all the Warner Archive releases. They really put a lot of care and love into the releases. You can tell they love movies as much as we the fans do. This DVD is this Critic's "Choice"! I loved it! And I am pretty sure if you are a fan of Bob Hope or Lucille Ball you will too.

So if you are a fan of Bob Hope, Lucille Ball or just great comedy films Critic's Choice is one you have to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and get your copy today!
