Pan AM The Complete Series {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 1960s the world entered the jet age. People could visit different parts of the world in no time. This made dreams a reality. ABC realizing period pieces were big business decided to make this era a TV series. Thus in 2011, Pan AM was born

Short-lived as it was in case you missed it, you have another chance to see this series thanks to the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment. Giving TV fans the opportunity to add Pan Am the complete TV series to our collections.

The series follows the lives of the stewardess and pilots of Pan AM airlines. As they encounter romance, disasters, intrigue and more. Each character gets their own stories played out across these episodes.

Maggie Ryan is the lead flight attendant played masterfully by Christina Ricci. Maggie is joined by Colette Valois (
Karine Vanasse), a French stewardess, Catherine "Kate" Cameron (Kelli Garner), and Laura Cameron, a runaway bride who did so to travel the world. Laura is played by Margot Robbie a few years before her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. As for the male counterparts, the pilots are Dean Lowrey (Mike Vogel), a Boeing 707 pilot recently promoted to captain on Pan Am's international routes and one of the youngest airline captains in the industry and Ted Vanderway (Michael Mosley), the crew's first officer. But the women are the stars of this show.

The sets, costumes, and music. No words can describe it! It was very well done! This series takes you right back to the '60s. It is amazing to see the class that was in the 60s. People dressing up to go on a trip! Nowadays we go for comfort, not class! This series shows the elegance of the flight attendants of the 60s.

Now due to poor ratings, the show was canceled after only 14 episodes in the first season. So does that mean this show was bad? Actually no! It's not perfect, but there are a lot of good stories in this series and the acting is very good. Otherwise, I don't think it would have been nominated for 3 Emmy Awards.

I think if the show had been given another season we may have seen this show really find its legs and become something special, but sadly we will never know. All 14 episodes are found on this two DVD set.

DISC 1: Pilot | We'll Always Have Paris | Ich Bin Ein Berliner | Eastern Exposure | One Coin in a Fountain | The Genuine Article | Truth or Dare

DISC 2: Unscheduled Departure | Kiss Kiss Bang Bang | Secrets and Lies | Diplomatic Relations | New Frontiers | Romance Languages | 1964

On the previous DVD release, the episodes ran out of order. Mill Creek Entertainment fixed that previous mistake and runs these episodes the way they were supposed to be seen. Good job Mill Creek Entertainment.

The show is presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Audio languages include English in Dolby Digital 5.1, with optional English subtitles. The two DVDs are in an eco keep case, with each disc on its own DVD hub. There is no stacking here which is some people's pet peeve.

You may think 7 episodes on one disc is too many and will cause for unwatchable videos. As I watched these episodes. I didn't find them that bad. There are slight signs of compression artifacts but nothing that should take away from the enjoyment of this show.

So if you love the period piece TV shows. I suggest you give Pan AM The Complete Series a try. You may just find a new favorite. Head over to Amazon.com or your local DVD Provider and get your copy today!
