Charles Dickens is one of literature's greatest artists. Many think of him as only the author if A Christmas Carol, but nothing could be farther from the truth. He produced such literary classics as; The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, A Tale of two cities and Great Expectations.
His stories have been adapted to film and TV time and time again. Some good some maybe not so good. Now the good folks at Alpha Video is bringing us a double feature of Dickens film adaptions on one DVD. Let's take a look at what is included.
Our Rating System:
**** = Don’t Miss it!
*** = Worth a look.
** = An Ok way to spend an evening.
* = You haven’t missed anything.
Nicholas Nickleby (1947) After his father death Nicholas is now the man of the house and must support his family. He lands a job working at a school, but he butts heads with Wackford Squeers, the brutal
headmaster. He leaves the school and
reunites with his mother and
sister, Kate. But soon finds out his uncle, Ralph, has mistreated Kate and his
mother, and he must defend their honor. ***
David Copperfield (1970) This was a British production for US TV airing. Copperfield
is a grown man strolling on the beach, remembering his youth as
an orphan who was passed around like a cold. His life finally changes for the better when he meets
his eccentric aunt Betsey, and the beautiful Agnes, the woman he will
marry. ***
These two films boast of some amazing actors such as Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Richard Attenborough, and a cameo appearance by the great Laurence Olivier. Both films are well adapted stories.
Both films are presented in full screen format. David Copperfield looks very good. While Nicholas Nickleby sadly does shows it's age, quite a bit. But I don't feel it is bad enough to consider it a pass.
