Mill Creek Entertainment has released 3 of the classic Benji films on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital combo pack, Benji The Original Movie, For the Love of Benji and Benji's very own Christmas Story.
What an amazing job Mill Creek Entertainment has been doing with these releases! Well, now its time for the 2004 movie Benji off the Leash to get it's Blu-ray treatment!
The film follows a teenage boy named Colby. His abusive stepfather is running an illegal puppy mill. But when he is going to get rid of one little "mutt" cause he can't make money on him, Colby rescues the little one and takes care of him. Under Colby's care, the little pup grows to be the canine hero Benji. Years later Benji and his new friend Lizard Tongue, a stray dog friends go on an adventure to rescue his mother from the puppy mill before she dies from over breeding!
This is a beautifully written story! It has heart and emotion. It shines a light on real social issues of not only parental abuse but animal abuse as well!
Is this film as good as the original Benji films? No! But in my opinion that would be very hard to do! Some films are just special and can not be recreated no matter how hard you try! But it is a very good film! The film on blu-ray is presented in 1080p High Definition (1.85:1) and uncompressed 5.1 DTS-HD master audio. There is also English subtitled for the hearing impaired. The colors are vibrant and audio is crisp. It looks and sounds stunning!
Now if a beautiful copy of the film wasn't enough, this Blu-ray release is loaded with bonus features. They include; an audio commentary with Director Joe Camp, editor Dava Whisenant, composer Anthony Di Lorenzo and producer Margaret Loesch. There is two featurettes, Behind the scenes of Benji: Off the leash and Benji Movie Memories looking back at scenes from five Benji movies. There is also the original trailer and a new HD trailer as well!
This is a great little Blu-ray release loaded with bonus features. It would be a great addition to anyone's canine section of their Blu-ray collection.
