Three Broadway Girls (1932)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In 1953 of the most beautiful women in Hollywood joined forces for a film. Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall and Marylin Monroe in How to marry a millionaire. But this was not an original film, oh no. First it was a play "The Greeks Had a Word for It" by Zoë Akins. Than in 1932 it was made into a film under the title Three Broadway Girls.

Alpha Video has been releasing classic films on DVD, keeping them alive in the memories of classic film fanatics and introducing them to a whole new generation of film lovers. The next one to get a release is this comedy.

The story follows Jean, Polaire, and Schatze, ex-showgirls who put their money together and rent a luxurious penthouse apartment. The whole purpose is to procure wealthy boyfriends, by acting and dressing like millionaires themselves. Will there plan work or will it all be for naught? You'll have to see the film to find out.

The three beauties in this version are Joan Blondell, Madge Evans and Ina Claire. Maybe these names don't mean a lot to the causal film person but these ladies were in the upper echelon of Hollywood glamour in the 30s.

The script is a well written piece of screwball comedy, which is a hard thing to accomplish. The ladies do a good job leading this film. I have to say it is a pretty funny and charming little film.

The DVD houses the film in full screen format. It looks and sounds good for the age of the film. There is some imperfections is the picture and the sound. But you have to expect that from a film that is nearly 90 years old.

So if your a fan of classic comedy or Joan Blondell this is a must for your collection. Head over to Oldies.com today and get your copy of this classic on DVD.
