The Creature With the Atom Brain (1955)

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

Before George A. Romero’s Night of the living dead, zombie’s were more or less mindless killing machines, controlled by evil people. They were not the walking dead. One such film that featured these mindless machines was The creature with the atom brain. This film was released by Mill Creek Entertainment on DVD. Let's take a look at this release.

The film follows a police doctor Chet Walker who is tracking down gangster Frank Buchanan. Sounds easy huh? Wrong because Frank has enlisted the services of ex-Nazi scientist Wilhelm Steigg to create zombies by resurrecting corpses through radiation in order to seek revenge on his enemies.

The story is full of 60s cheesy goodness. It moves along at lightning speed so you don't get to bored with it. The actors take their roles very seriously, which I prefer in these, than when the actors camp it up. The film was produced by Sam Katzman who produced many, many film in his career almost 40 year career. The direction of the film was taken over by Edward L. Cahn who is best known for directing Our Gang shorts from 1939-43. He was known for being able to shoot films fast but masterfully.

As for the film transfer to this DVD. It looks amazing for a 60 year old film. The picture is razor sharp and the audio is crystal clear. The only downside is no bonus features on the DVD release. But for sci-fi fanatics the film will be enough!
