Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928) {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

When you think of the silent era of films two names usually come to mind, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. These two were able to transcend time and still are popular even to this day.

Buster Keaton was known for his stone face even through the most insane of situations. Well, the good folks at Alpha Video is now releasing one of Buster Keaton's best feature films, Steamboat Bill Jr.

The films follows William Canfield, better known as "Steamboat Bill", who is the owner of an old riverboat. Needing help to get his boat up to speed, he calls for help from his son from college who he hasn't seen since he was a baby. Expecting a huge hulking man like himself, instead he get skinny cowardly Jr, Buster Keaton. The film goes from one hilarious scene to the next in an epic 70 minute slapstick farce.

Now if it wasn't enough to receive this classic film Alpha Video decides to amp it up and include not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 bonus Buster Keaton short subjects as well!

One week (1920): Buster buys a house for his wife, he has to build it himself.

Cops (1922): Buster decides to get into the furniture business, not realizing all the furniture's stolen.

The Blacksmith (1922): Keaton plays an assistant blacksmith who accidentally puts his boss out of commission.

The Balloonatic (1922): Buster goes on a wild balloon ride that lands him out in the country and into trouble.

I will be honest this is not a collection of films for everyone! Some people just can't appreciate the comic genius of Buster Keaton's silent films, but for true film aficionados this is a nice snapshot into the past.

I consider it a must add to any classic comedy film fans collection.
There is some imperfections in the prints of these films, but in my opinion they look pretty good considering the age of each films.

So if your a fan of silent films, Buster Keaton or classic comedy. I highly suggest picking up this DVD for your collection. Head over to Oldies.com and pick up your copy today.
