Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century The Complete Series (1999-2001) {DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

Some characters are so iconic they transcend all time! Sherlock Holmes is just such a character! In the late 90s it was time to bring Sherlock Holmes to the future! Hence the premise for Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. Now thank to the fine folks at Mill Creek Entertainment we can all own the entire cartoon series is on DVD!

The show follows this story line! In the 22nd century Inspector Beth Lestrade (descendant of the original Inspector Lestrade), finds herself in a crime wave that is wreaking havoc on the city. What is she to do?! Let's bring Sherlock Holmes back from the dead. And after all what is Holmes without Watson? So they program the brain of Watson into an android! Seem a bit out there?! Well, hey it was the late 90s! What do you expect!

This 2 disc DVD set includes both seasons of this short lived cartoon series! On high quality DVDs. In a DVD case hub, instead of the paper sleeves. That so many people hated on! Me I thought it was fine, but I digress. You get 13 episodes on each DVD. Let's take a look at the episodes included on each disc.

Disc 1: The Fall and Rise of Sherlock Holmes, The Crime Machine, The Hounds of the Baskervilles, The Resident Patient, The Scales of Justice, The Five Orange Pips, The Adventures of the Beryl Board, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Secret Safe, The Adventure of the Marzin Chip, The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Red-Headed League

Disc 2:
The Adventure of the Dancing Man, The Adventure of the Second Stain, A Case of Identity, The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, The Man with the Twisted Lip, Silver blaze, The Adventure of the Deranged Detective, The Sign of Four, The Crooked Man, The 'Gloria Scott', The Adventure of Six Napoleons, The Musgrave Ritual, The Adventure of the Creeping Man

All of these episodes are based on iconic stories in the mythos of Sherlock Holmes. The entire series on one DVD collection! That is a Sherlockian's dream come true! With 13 episode on one disc you think the audio and video would suffer, but actually the audio and video quality in these episode are quite good!

On a side note of the production itself, I have to be honest the early CGI scenes in the episodes leave a lot to be desired, but that is a minor complaint! The stories move along nicely and the voice actors did a good job capturing the characters. I found this series to be a fun little escape from the cares of everyday life. I really enjoyed it!

So if you love Sherlock Holmes this is defiantly one to check out! If your not a die hard Sherlock fan maybe not so much! But I think Sherlockians will enjoy a different take on the classic detective! Head over to www.MillCreekEnt.com or your local DVD provider today and get a copy for yourself!
