Our world has began to be inundated with comic book movies and tv shows. For comic book fans this is a dream come true. But there were time that comic books made it to the small screen before. In 1978 CBS ordered a pilot movie of Marvel’s sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange created by Steve Ditko. Shout Factory has released this made of tv movie on DVD.

In the film we see Thomas Lindmer, a world-weary sorcerer, foresees the return of his ancient adversary Morgan LeFey to Earth. LeFey had been granted dominance over men’s souls by The Nameless One. Realizing he no longer has the strength to fight her evil magic any more he decides to pass along the Guardianship of the Light onto a young psychiatry-resident, Dr. Stephen Strange (
Peter Hooten).

The film was meant to be more than just a movie. The hopes was for the film to lead into a TV series for Marvel and CBS, but sadly the ratings were low. Mostly in part because it went up against the ratings juggernaut the mini-series Roots.

Doctor Strange gets a little bit of a bad wrap.
Yes the film strays from the source material! The acting is OK the story is a bit slow getting started, but the music is epic. I enjoyed the film. I think people just didn’t want to give it a chance.

So do yourself a favor and add the original Dr. Strange movie to your collection! Head over to Amazon.com.
