88 Films Blu-ray Review: Gorgeous 玻璃樽 (1999)

American audiences truly became aware of the comedy and action of Jackie Chan when he teamed up with comedian Chris Tucker in the Rush Hour franchise. Although he did many films before this.

Long before he would travel to America Jack Chan would become a action star in Hong Kong. So his filmography is pretty extensive! One of the films he would star in was 1999's 玻璃樽 or as it was known here in American as Gorgeous or The Glass Bottle.

Now 88 Films have been going above and beyond and producing some of the most impressive deluxe Blu-rays of foreign films such as Blood and Diamonds, The Chinese Boxer, Disciples of Shao Lin, and Magnificent Warriors. Now it is time for Gorgeous to shine on Blu-ray thanks to 88 Films.

Young and beautiful Bu (Shu Qi, The Transporter) finds a romantic message in a bottle near her family restaurant in Taiwan. On a whim, she flies to Hong Kong to meet her potential soul mate, who turns out to be Albert (Tony Leung, Infernal Affairs), a gay beautician pining for his ex. Taking pity on the girl, he brings her to his workplace, where she falls for the wealthy and lonely C.N. Chan (Jackie Chan, Rush Hour, Supercop). But when Chan's lifelong enemy, Lo, discovers Chan has a new love, he decides to ruin their happiness.

When you have such iconic and fun roles in your filmography not every film you do is going to be as good as the other films. Gorgeous is a fun film, but the humor doesn't always seem to translate in my opinion. But by no means am I saying that this film is bad. It just seems a little uneven.

Now 88 Films have produced a Blu-ray release that includes the original Hong Kong Version and the International versions of this film restored in 2K from the original Hong Kong film materials. The Hong Kong cut is 2 hours in length were the international cut is 99 minutes long. I will say that the shorter version in my humble opinion is the superior version, as it runs at a faster pace.

These versions of the film are presented in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio with the soundtrack in a 5.1 surround sound. There is also the option for English subtitles. But the coolest part of this is that we get the English dubbed versions of this film. When looking at the film newly restored in 2K, the film looks as sounds amazing! The colors are bright and vibrant and the English dub is clear and clean.

Now a beautiful looking 2K scan is not all that is included in this Blu-ray, no way. 88 Films always added a nice bunch of bonus features and for Gorgeous this one is no different. Take a look at what is included in this set.

* Audio Commentary with Frank Djeng and FJ Desanto

In the final analysis while Gorgeous is not Jackie Chan's best film, this Blu-ray is the best! This Blu-ray features a great 2k scan, 3 audio commentaries including one with the great Jackie Chan himself. Interviews, music videos, trailers, a great movie poster (which I love), a booklet filled with great information. Such an awesome release.
