The Nun's Story (1959) Warner Archive Blu-ray Review

Audrey Hepburn was an amazing actress. She played in some great films over her career. One of my favorites would have to be Wait Until Dark. That film was released by Warner Archive Collection a few years ago.

A film where she spread your acting wings was 1959's The Nun's Story. In 2018 Warner Archive released that film a few years ago on DVD. But now 6 years later, after a complete restoration it is time for this classic to be released in HD on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: The Nun's Story is an unforgettable revelation of the seldom-seen world behind convent walls. A radiant Audrey Hepburn portrays a nun whose life journey takes her from the staff of a mental asylum to a much-desired position as a surgical nurse in the Belgian Congo. But when she returns to her native Belgium as World War II breaks out, she is torn between the needs of the Resistance and the church's neutrality.

This film was expertly directed by four-time Academy Award winner Fred Zinnemann. This eye opening really takes you behind the scenes of what it means to be a nun. The sacrifice and dedication one must have. Now wonder the film earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

The Nun's Story runs 2 and a half hours but you would never even realize it! Audrey Hepburn put in one of her best performances here, while saying very little. Director Fred Zinnemann surrounds her with wonderful female actresses including, Edith Evans (The Importance of Being Earnest), Peggy Ashcroft (A Passage to India), Mildred Dunnock (Baby Doll), Beatrice Straight (Patterns, Network), Patricia Collinge (Shadow of a Doubt), Ruth White (Midnight Cowboy), Colleen Dewhurst (Annie Hall). Than there are the men in this cast Peter Finch (Raid on Entebbe), Dean Jagger (Twelve O'Clock High), Lionel Jeffries (First Men In the Moon) and Niall MacGinnis (Night of the Demon).

Warner Archive Collection have transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This Blu-ray release features a brand new 4k restoration scan from the original camera negative. This new transfer brings a clarity and a vibrance to this film. The colors are beautiful the picture is crisp and clean and the audio is clear as a bell! This is a remarkable looking scan!

The only downside I can find with this Blu-ray is the lack of bonus features. The only bonus found on this release is the theatrical trailer. Some classic cartoons or a vintage short would have taken this amazing release to even bigger heights.

The Nun's Story is a beautiful film with a tremendous performance by Audrey Hepburn, and this Blu-ray release is the perfect way to experience it! Warner Archive continually impresses with the picture quality of their Blu-ray release!

So, if you love the acting of Audrey Hepburn you need to see one of her nuanced and best performances in The Nun's Story. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today.
