Blu-ray Review: Magnificent Warriors (1987)

88 films have been releasing some of the most impressive foreign films on Blu-ray. The latest being the Italian crime adventure Blood and Diamonds. But amazing Kung Fu adventures were part of the releases. Yes I am talking about The Chinese Boxer and Disciples of Shao Lin.

Now it's time for the next Blu-ray and it is the Blu-ray debut of the 1987 martial arts adventure film starring Michelle Yeoh entitled Magnificent Warriors.

In the 1930s there is a conflict between Chine and Japan. A daredevil airplane pilot Fok Ming-ming (Michelle Yeoh, Everything, Everywhere All at once) and a spy fights against the occupying Japanese forces in China. They must rescue the ruler of the city of Kaal from the hands of a ruthless Japanese general and his advancing army.

Magnificent Warriors is a fun little adventure film
that really has a Raiders of the Lost Ark feel to it.  Michelle Yeoh is an extremely strong lead. This is way ahead of it's time. We see really strong female leads now all the time in films, but in 1987 not so much. She is a great actress! No wonder she is the first Asian actress to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress!

Magnificent Warriors debuts on Blu-ray transferred
 in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This features a brand new 2K Restoration From the Original Camera Negatives. The audio options are a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio English Soundtrack and a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio Cantonese Soundtrack with newly translated English Subtitles.

This new restoration looks and sounds amazing! 88 Film never ceases to amaze me at the work they put into their releases. Along with an amazing restoration they added some great bonuses to this Blu-ray set. Take a look at what in included!

* Audio commentary with Asian cinema expert Frank Djeng

* Interview with Michelle Yeoh

* Interview with Tung Wai

* A Large folded poster

* A 40-page booklet with photos and essay

* Slipcover and reversible Blu-ray insert

So as you can see the interesting audio commentary and interviews are great on disc features. But the 40 page booklet is so good filled with great stuff. There is also a poster. I always love this very nice addition. I think is one of my favorite features from 88 films.

So if you are a fan of Asian cinema and you love Raiders of the Lost Ark. Take a chance and check out Magnificent Warrior, you may just find a new films you love. And this 88 Films Blu-ray release is a perfect way to experience it for the first time. head over to
