Noir Archive Volume 2 {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Film Noirs were big business back in the 50's. These kind of dark mysterious moody films could be made fast and cheap for a quick turn around. And it seemed film fans couldn't get enough of this type of entertainment.

Kit Parker Films in association with Mill Creek Entertainment released Volume 1 of 9 film noirs remastered and presented in High definition on Blu-ray. You can read our review of that set here! Well, now it's time for Volume 2. Let's take a look at what is included in this set on Round 2.

Our Rating System:
**** = Don’t Miss it!
*** = Worth a look.
** = An Ok way to spend an evening.
* = You haven’t missed anything.

Disc One:

Bait (1954) A beautiful blonde leads a man down the road to ruin.***

The Crooked Web (1955) Government agent tries to trick a suspect into returning to Germany, the scene of his crimes.***

Cell 2455, Death Row (1955) Caryl Chessman goes from youthful offender to death-row prisoner at San Quentin. ***

Disc Two
:

5 Against the House (1955)
Four vets attending college on the GI Bill and a cabaret singer try to rob a Reno Casino and pull off the perfect crime. ***

The Night Holds The Terror (1955)
A group of escaped convicts take over a suburban home to avoid a police manhunt, making the lives of the family living there a nightmare. Based on a real-life hostage-taking. ***
New Orleans Uncensored (1955) A Navy veteran purchases a government surplus vessel and becomes involved in the capture of waterfront racketeers. ***
Disc Three:

Footsteps in the Fog (1955) In early 1900s England, a maid tries to blackmail her master into romancing her when she discovers he murdered his wife. ***

Spin a Dark Web (1955)
A Canadian in London is failing to succeed as a prizefighter. When he meets the sister of a local mob leader, and he is drawn into the gang. ***

Rumble on the Docks (1956)
A juvenile delinquent puts his gang behind a New York waterfront union racketeer. ***

These films have amazing collection of actors including but not limited to Stewart Granger, Kim Novak, Robert Blake, John Cassavetes, William Conrad, Kerwin Mathews, Beverly Garland and many more. It is also very cool to note that the great William Castle directed New Orleans Uncensored.

As for the audio on all films it is DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0. There are also English subtitles for each film for the hearing impaired. These film look and sound better than I have seen them before. This makes an amazing little addition to any film noir or film fans collection.

As for the packaging the 3 blu-ray discs are in a sturdy stack-able blu-ray case. I love the art work having a great scene from the film "Cell 2455, Death Row" in the forefront and the posters of each movie underneath, really nicely done. I love the fact that Volume 1 has blue and gray lettering where this one is red and grey. Very distinct and very cool!

As for the Blu-ray menus are easy to access just highlight the poster of the film and click and watch the film.
Very simple and very nice!

So if your a fan of Film Noirs as much as I am, this is a really great set to add to your collection! Head over to www.MVDShop.com or Amazon.com today.
