Clash of the Titans (1981) 4K UHD Review – Arrow Video Brings the Mythological Fantasy Classic to Life!

Stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen's illustrious career spanned four decades and brought us some of the most unforgettable sequences in cinema history. Films like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953).

In 1981, he worked on his final film and arguably one of his best, Clash of the Titans. Now 45 years later, Arrow Video is releasing this film on deluxe 4k UltraHD Blu-ray.

Synopsis: To win the hand of the Princess Andromeda, Perseus must solve riddles, tame the winged horse Pegasus, battle mighty creatures and outwit the gods themselves. Giant scorpions, two headed hounds, the gorgon Medusa and even the Kraken itself stand in our hero’s way – in besting them, he will become a legend in his own right.

Clash of the Titans is a perfect mixture of stop-motion animation and live action. Harry Hamlin embodies the hero Perseus. But this film boasts great acting by the legendary Laurence Olivier, Ursula Andress, Maggie Smith and Burgess Meredith.

Director Desmond Davis manages to bring the complex story of the Greek gods together in an exciting 2-hour adventure. In my humble opinion, the Medusa sequence is simply the greatest that Harryhausen ever did in his career. Clash of the Titans is timeless and still holds up 45 years later.

Arrow Video decided it was time for this film to be restored in 4k and I am so glad they did. They restored this film from the original 35mm negative. It has been transferred to 4k in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English Dolby Atmos 2.0 track. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

In my home video library, I have the DVD edition of Clash of the Titans, so I wanted to compare the 4k version to the DVD. WOW!  The film's colors are beautiful. Most of the film is sharp, but there are points in this film where the picture is soft and the dark sequences seem a bit murky. But I think it is still a tremendous upgrade from the DVD.
