When you hear "Highway to Hell" most think of the iconic song by AC/DC, they wouldn't think of B movie director Brent McCormick. But in 1990 Brent McCormick produced and directed a killer thriller entitled Highway to Hell.
Highway to Hell is celebrating its 36 birthday. So Visual Vengeance (known for giving B movies deluxe home video releases) have given this film a super deluxe Blu-ray for the first time ever. Now physical media fans can enjoy this film for generation to come.
Synopsis: Convicted mass-murderer Toby Gilmore has escaped from prison, and the open desert becomes his playground for sadism and destruction. Determined to stop him after failing to execute him years earlier, officer Earl Dent (Richard Harrison) sets out on a relentless pursuit that turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse. But Gilmore has taken a hostage--Fran Tucker, a young woman caught in the wrong place at the worst possible time. As the chase hurtles across backroads and wastelands, Dent closes in, each mile bringing he and Gilmore closer to an explosive reckoning on the highway to hell.
Highway to Hell is a low-budget exploitation film that was shot in rural Texas. The film benefits from the low-budget help, making the film feel real, ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The story is a good one. The acting is a bit all over the place some really good performances and others not so much. It's a bit of a mixed bag.
Visual Vengeance has transferred Highway to Hell on Blu-ray on 1080p and is presented in the original full screen format 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Highway to Hell was shot in Standard Definition. Visual Vengeance re-mastered the film from original tape elements. So granted the video quality is not mind-blowing spectacular. But I was impressed in how good it looked for a low-budget feature.
As with all Visual Vengeance releases, these are not bare bones Blu-rays. They always put their best foot forward and this Blu-ray is no different. Take a look at the cool bonuses included on this Blu-ray release.
